Facts about the breed

Coat Types

Powderpuff

Hairless

Yes, Chinese Cresteds come in a coated variety! Their full coat is long and silky, sometimes thick and cotton-like. It doesn't continuously grow, so it stops after a certain length. Which itself varies. And while they are double coated, they actually shed very little.

The hairless is the most commonly known coat type. It ranges from true hairless to very hairy hairless, they all have different amounts of body hair but all are still genetically hairless.

Hairless Skin Info

  • You will noticed that your darker skinned Cresteds will tan during the spring/summer. Just like us humans they can tan or burn in the sun. The paler skinned Cresteds will burn, so it is very important to make sure they are not out too long or have some sort of protection.

  • Sweat?? Yep, you may notice your pup feeling or smelling sweaty at times. A good wipe down or bath will handle that.

  • Blackheads and acne are both very common in Chinese Cresteds so skin care, diet, and genetics are important here. There are many skin care options to look into to prevent or get rid of the two.

Identifying coat type by teeth

While DNA testing is the most accurate/for sure way to tell if you Crested is a hairless or powderpuff, you can also tell by their teeth.

Powderpuffs have normal teeth, they are shaped like any other coated dog. Meaning,  it is thick and have that slight curve in the canines.

On a hairless, you'll notice how their teeth are slighty  thinner looking and the canines are straighter.

This tip is perfect for those who need help IDing a possible powderpuff or very hairy hairless.
